A rise in the case of rare fatal infection, the black fungus was reported in COVID infected patients. The disease leads to blackening over bodies.

A professor at Britain’s Manchester University and an expert at Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI) charity, David Denning said, “there have been cases reported in several other countries including the UK, US, France, Austria, Brazil, and Mexico but the volume is much bigger in India”.

Aparna Mukherjee, a Scientist at ICMR, said: “It’s not something to panic about, but you have to be aware of when to seek consultation”.

Meanwhile, doctors at a leading healthcare facility in Hyderabad have come across COVID-19 positive patients who are suffering from this deadly fungal infection. In the past 3-4 weeks, a total of five patients have been reported with this infection at Continental Hospital.

The major complication is that India’s overwhelmed hospitals, desperately short of beds as well as the oxygen needed for severely ill COVID-19 patients.
