Heavy Penalties for Lost or Damaged Passports
Citizens who lose or damage their passports will face the heaviest financial pinch under the new guidelines. Replacing a standard 36-page booklet will now incur a flat rate of ₹5,000, while a high-priority 60-page replacement under the Tatkaal scheme has jumped exponentially to ₹8,500.
Major Changes for Indian Expats Abroad
The MEA has also modernized the fee schedules handled by Indian missions and consulates overseas. For non-resident Indians (NRIs) applying from foreign hubs, a standard fresh 36-page passport application will now cost $125 USD under the normal route and $250 USD for Tatkaal processing. Miscellaneous certifications like the PCC or Surrender Certificate at overseas missions have been capped at $40 USD.
Important Relief Retained: The government has confirmed that a 10% fee discount will continue to apply to fresh passport applications (excluding reissues) for young children up to 8 years of age and senior citizens above 60 years.
Officials have clarified that the new prices will be locked entirely based on the submission and payment date of the application. Any application filed and paid for before midnight on June 30 will still process under the older rates.
