New Delhi (newsalert24x7): In a major development that has raised serious questions about online child safety and social media accountability, Delhi Police has registered a case against Meta India over allegations that child sexual abuse and exploitation-related content was accessible through its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

The action reportedly follows directions from Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), who announced the development through a post on social media platform X. The case has brought renewed attention to the growing challenges of protecting children from online exploitation and the responsibility of major technology companies to prevent the circulation of illegal and harmful material on their platforms.

Proactive AI Moderation vs Ground Reality

Interestingly, the development comes at a time when Meta has been highlighting its efforts to strengthen its content moderation systems through artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced detection technologies.

According to figures shared by the company, between January and June 2026, Meta took action against approximately 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation-related content in India across Facebook and Instagram. More than 98 per cent of these cases were reportedly detected automatically by its systems before users submitted complaints.

At the global level, the company stated that action was taken against approximately 33.2 million such pieces of content during the same six-month period.

Evasion Tactics & Countermeasures

Meta has also acknowledged that individuals involved in illegal activities may misuse advertisements and external websites to direct users towards prohibited material while attempting to avoid detection.

To address this challenge, the company has reportedly expanded the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-powered red-teaming agents to examine advertisements that may appear harmless but could potentially lead users to suspicious external links.

Furthermore, Meta has stated that it has strengthened its reporting mechanisms in India to facilitate the direct reporting of child-safety-related cases to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, operated under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

Spotlight on Platform Accountability

The latest police action has once again brought the issue of digital child protection, platform accountability and the effectiveness of AI-based monitoring systems into the spotlight.

The investigation is expected to focus on the allegations and the responsibilities of the concerned platform in preventing the availability and circulation of illegal content involving children.
