Bhubaneswar, June 29 (newsalert24x7): The holy town of Puri transformed into a sea of devotion today as thousands of pilgrims gathered at the Shree Jagannath Temple to witness the grand Deba Snana Purnima 2026 (Snana Yatra). Marking the sacred birthday of Lord Jagannath, this auspicious full moon day of the Jyeshtha month offers devotees their first public glimpse of the sibling deities outside the sanctum sanctorum each year.
The mega festival was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who joined the ocean of worshippers chanting "Jai Jagannath" on the Grand Road.
The Sacred Bath: 108 Pitchers of Holy Water
The high-stakes temple rituals commenced before dawn with the spiritual Mangala Arati, Dwaralagi, and Pushpanjali. Following this, the deities were escorted to the elevated Snana Mandap (bathing platform) overlooking the Grand Road in a spectacular, rhythmic procession known as Pahandi Bije.
The core ritual, Jala Bije, took place under strict traditional timelines:
- The Ritual: Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra were ceremonially bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water.
- The Source: The water was drawn exclusively from the sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well) inside the temple premises.
- The Ingredients: The water was highly purified and aromatic, infused with premium sandalwood paste, camphor, jaiphala, and rare medicinal herbs.
The Majestic Transformation: Following the holy bath, the deities were beautifully adorned in the famous Hati Besha (or Gajanana Besha). Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra assumed the majestic elephant-headed form of Lord Ganesha to fulfill an ancient 15th-century legend, while Goddess Subhadra was dressed in stunning lotus-themed attire.
Massive Fortress-Like Security Blanket
With a massive influx of local and international tourists flooding the city, the Odisha Police and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) deployed unprecedented security and crowd management systems.
- Police Deployment: Nearly 79 platoons of police force along with over 900 home guards swarmed the city. This included Quick Action Teams (QATs), rooftop surveillance, and anti-snatching squads.
- Hi-Tech Surveillance: A network of over 400 CCTV cameras (152 inside the temple and 250+ across the city) was monitored in real-time by senior police officials through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
- Traffic Restraints: The entire stretch leading directly to the Lion’s Gate was declared a strict No-Vehicle Zone, with major traffic checkpoints active at Malatipatapur and Harekrushnapur Chhak.
The 15-Day Seclusion: Anasara Period Begins
Following the spectacular evening public darshan of the Hati Besha, the grand gates will close tonight as the deities enter a 15-day period of strict isolation known as Anasara.
According to Jagannath culture and folklore, the extensive public bathing ritual causes the deities to develop a "divine fever." They will heal inside the Anasara Ghar, treated with secret Ayurvedic formulations like Phuluri Tela by the temple's traditional physicians (Daitapatis). During these 15 days, public viewing of the idols is strictly prohibited, and devotees will instead worship the Patti Dian (traditional painted cloth images).
The holy trinity will finally re-emerge in their rejuvenated youth (Nava Jaubana Darshan) just a day before the world-famous Rath Yatra hits the streets.
