Most Wanted Maoist Leader Sukru Surrenders

In a significant breakthrough for security forces, Odisha’s most wanted Maoist leader *Sukru alias Kosha Sodhi* has finally surrendered in Kandhamal district—marking a turning point in the state’s fight against insurgency.

Carrying a massive bounty of ₹55 lakh, the 49-year-old was one of the most senior active members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). Along with four associates, Sukru laid down arms before the police, handing over an *AK-47 rifle* as well.

Senior officials, including ADG (Anti-Naxal Operations) *Sanjeeb Panda*, confirmed that all five are now in custody. A formal surrender ceremony is set to take place tomorrow.

📍 Who is Sukru?

A native of Malkangiri, Sukru was a state committee member and led a group of around 13 Maoists, mostly from neighboring Chhattisgarh. His operations were concentrated in the dense forests of Kandhamal.

He was considered a major obstacle to surrender movements within the Maoist ranks. Earlier this year, he allegedly killed a fellow commander who wanted to surrender—highlighting internal tensions within the group.

🔥 Why This Surrender Matters

Security forces had been closing in on Sukru’s hideouts across the tri-junction of:

* Kandhamal
* Rayagada
* Kalahandi

With relentless operations, drone surveillance, and emotional appeals from families, pressure mounted—eventually forcing the top rebel to surrender.

📉 Maoist Movement Weakening?

This development comes amid a wave of recent surrenders:

* 10 Maoists led by Sanu Pottam (March 11)
* 11 Maoists led by Nakul (March 15)

Odisha Police now believes the state is *on the brink of becoming Maoist-free*, with a target set for March 31.

What’s Next?

Officials are hopeful that Sukru’s surrender will inspire remaining insurgents to return to mainstream life under the state’s rehabilitation policy.

A long-standing chapter of insurgency in Odisha may finally be nearing its end.
